You Are My Destiny
There's a pleasant symmetry between Nancy Whang's lyrics and the Juan MacLean's fizzy house concoction on "You Are My Destiny". MacLean orchestrates a very familiar set of peaks and valleys; dance fans will implicitly understand when the breakdowns are coming as Whang flatly dictates lyrics about the preordained. It doesn't feel like standard jackin', though, because Maclean all but ignores the bassline-- it's just two stabs of grimy synth-- in favor of shifting, sampled chords. Maclean combines these with reverb-heavy samples of Whang's vocal, and builds the track into something with surprising harmonic character. It's a strong mix of talents: Whang's Ze Records-inspired punky nonchalance and Maclean's classicist house chops. It's a welcome return from a producer who's been too quiet in recent years.
