Take Me On the Wildest Spree [Excursions In Nugaze]

Take Me On the Wildest Spree [Excursions In Nugaze]

It's been almost two decades since NME coined the 'Shoegazing' term somewhat mockingly. It was the original shoegazing bands like Ride, Moose, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Chapterhouse, Slowdive, etc. that turned the indie music movement of the early '90s on its head. There was no denying in 1989-90 that a new musical genre had been born. However after Ride broke up in 1996 and My Bloody Valentine went into hibernation, it seemed that shoegazing may be consigned to the discount record bin of history. In the last few years, however, there have been an increasing number of signs suggesting that shoegazing is enjoying a well deserved resurrection. Not only was shoegazing not dead, thanks to a group of bands sometimes called 'Nugazers' (New Shoegazers), the genre is positively flourishing. The 16 nugaze groups selected for this compilation are amongst the best we've come across. Although the original shoegazing scene was very much a Thames Valley/Home Counties affair, this new crop of bands hail from places as geographically diverse as NYC (Soundpool and The Invisible Kid), Germany (Malory), and, of course, Australia (Fluorescent and MistandSea). While most people may not have been fortunate enough to experience shoegazing reach its original zenith in 1992, the Nugazers represented on this compilation prove the movement is as alive now as it's ever been.
