by Scott YanowPrior to 1976, the talented bop-oriented trumpeter Idrees Sulieman had only led one record date (back in 1964). On this superior set, Sulieman is teamed in Copenhagen with tenor saxophonist Per Goldschmidt, pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Niels Pedersen, and drummer Kenny Clarke. They perform a pair of straight-ahead originals, Michel Legrand's "The Summer Knows," and a pair of bop standards ("Wee" and "Billie's Bounce"). Excellent music with plenty of colorful solos.
