The album is constructed fairly symmetrically: the first and last tracks are much longer works, clocking in at twelve and thirteen minutes, respectively, while the middle four songs all hover around the six-minute mark. The tracks are creatively named, too, beginning with “Part 1” and ending with “Part 6.” The titles indicate that the six songs of Winterreise are intended to function as a cohesive whole, and in this effort, I can say that Fabio Orsi is entirely successful: it takes a very careful listen to perceive when the tracks change. Anyone listening to this album as background music is much more likely to hear it as a solid block of fifty minutes than as six differentiated pieces.
