Midwest
“Midwest” continues a stream of new music from Australian indie outfit Vacations since their breakout 2022 year. The past 18 months have seen the band’s music generate over 2.5m video uses on TikTok and led to 1 billion streams to date. Their single “Young” reached platinum status & “Telephones” went gold in the US on top of impressive touring in 2022, which included their first-ever US tour with 32-dates sold-out and returning just 6 months later for a sold-out 11-date west coast run (upgrading from The Roxy in LA to the Fonda) with stops in Mexico City & a performance at Austin City Limits Music Festival. The touring traction continues in 2023 with a sold-out May UK run & appearance at The Great Escape in Brighton. Hailing from Newcastle, Australia, Vacations is an indie alt band making waves across the globe. Their music encapsulates a dreamy intention, soundtracking moments in everyday life. On their new bass-driven track “Midwest,” lead singer Campbell Burns reflects on the balance of touring and maintaining relationships. Expanding on this, Burns says “For me, every time I came home from tour, it’d be all over. It felt as if I was stuck in this cycle to the point where it became comical. My romantic life was a joke, and the duality between me at home vs. me on tour was further apart than ever.” With that juxtaposition of driving forces in mind, Burns channeled that into the composition of the song itself: “I wanted to write something upbeat and fun yet using lyrics I’d reserve for a ballad. A crying in the club type beat, but you’re with your friends, you’re moving on, and everything will be just fine.” The song was produced by Burns and John Velasquez (Zella Day, Broods) and has a warping nostalgic quality, complimenting Burns’ crooning voice over the pleading line “Because I miss you and I don’t want you to go.”
