A Broken Silence

A Broken Silence

A Broken Silence consist of Torcha (one half of hip hop duo, Hyjak and Torcha) and backing band. Tim Freedman (from the Whitlams) also pops up on their debut record and Ozi Batla swings through to add some guest raps. Oh, and somewhere along the way they gatecrashed a punk rock concert. In other words, there's a whole lot going on here production wise. Piano tinkering over breakbeats, cock-rock guitars, indie rock and Aussie hip hop - All For What has it all. The production may be across the board, but it's all very polished and tight-knit. A Broken Silence obviously know how to play and aren't afraid to showcase their influences. Unfortunately, it all falls apart when it comes to lyrics and vocals. Now, there's nothing wrong with having a social conscious and caring about 'the issues', but an entire album dedicated to complaining gets real old, real quick. Yes, governments are rotten, poverty sucks, growing up poor in the suburbs is no fun. We get it. We've heard it all before. We don't need an entire album of lyrical shoegazing, do we? Maybe sullen teens will get something out of this, but for the most part this is just emo/punk-lite with Torcha pointing out every single thing wrong with society.
