The Best Of Mantronix (1985 - 1999)
Tracks like 'Baseline' and "Who Is It', featuring the dedidely novel fusion of big Analog-Synth sounds with raw breakbeats, laid the groundwork for succesive generations of electro and techno producers (I.E Chemical beats, Big Beat, Digital Hardcore etc.) 'King Of The Beats', an incridible journey trough funky beats, is today revered as a classic Hip-Hop anthem. Little wonder then that samples of Mantornix music gigured predominantly in the succes of international hits by the Likes Of Snap, Redmann and Beck. Born in Jamaica and raised in Canada and the Us, Kurtis first got into music while working at the now defunct New York DJ Record store 'Downtown Records' in the early 1980's. After being introduced to Will Sokolov of the legendary Sleeping Bag Records Label, and teaming up with MC Tee, he released such classics as "bassline", 'Ladies, 'Scream', 'Who It Is' and the aforementioned 'King Of The Beats'. After singing to Capitol Records in the early 1990's the massive hits 'Got To Have Your Love', 'Take Your Time', and "Don't Go Messin' With My Heart' followed. Family obligations kept Kurtis away from music during the mid 90's, by late 1996, however, Kurtis re-emerged and began to record and produce in earnest. The tracks 'Mad' and 'Push Yer Hands Up', featured here and taken form his new album 'I Sing The Body Electro', released in early 1999. These New tracks are Kurtis's attempt to bridge the beat culture of the 80's with that of the 90's, reflectiing the diversity of sound in contemporary dance music. Touching on everything from Hip-Hop to Electro to Rock to Drum and Bass, they experiments that should help perpetuate the Mantronix legend well into the next milleninium. Clearly, Kurtis follows the beat of a different beatbox when it comes to production and his sound, ever kinetic, funky, experimental yet accessible, is just as relevant today as it was 14 years ago. This compilation is a convice history of singels and album tracks that changed the sound of music forever...
