Songs Unspoken

Songs Unspoken

Douglas Trowbridge began his fascination with the piano at the age of two-and-a-half. He was considereed a musical prodigy when, at three years of age, he began studying classical piano with the University of Utah's Dean of Music, Professor Thomas Giles. Before he was four years old, Douglas gave his first of many recitals at church, playing pieces by Bach, Brahms and Scarlatti. As a teenager, Douglas explored the world of jazz and improvisation and wrote many piano compositions. He says his greatest musical influences were George Greshwin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Claude Debussy and Aaron Copeland. All the compositions, arrangedments and piano improvisations on Songs Unspoken are by Douglas Trowbridge, except for "Finlandia", which was composed by Jean Sibelius. Songs Unspoken is dedicated to Professor Giles. Songs Unspoken features mellow solo piano performances by Douglas Trowbridge. Trowbridge's compositions are soothing but intricate; on pieces like "A Most Remarkable Meeting," "Unending Melody," and "For a Season" you can either be lulled by the drift of the melody or engaged by its subtle nuances. Some pieces, such as "Where Dreams Are Born," come close to sounding like clichéd new age piano music, but for the most part Songs Unspoken offers unobtrusive but distinctive twists on the style. "Finlandia" and "Beyond the Shadows" are some of the other highlights of this collection, which manages to express many moods and still sound focused yet relaxing. When I first listened to this album I didn’t really think there would be anything interesting to write about but I was surprised that the story of this performer is actually quite interesting. This performers real name was Richard Douglas Trowbridge Souther. He put out both albums on piano and synth. On his piano albums he used the name Douglas Trowbridge and on his synth albums he used the name Richard Souther. This being a piano album we’re listening to Douglas Trowbridge. Anyway this album is a nice piano instrumental album that may lull you to sleep but he is definitely a good pianist. Apparently the whole album was played on a 1940 Steinway. It’s a good album but don’t listen to it while operating heavy machinery. In 1985 the Douglas Trowbridge, "Songs Unspoken" solo piano recording was recorded. Douglas Trowbridge are actually the middle names of Richard Souther and the pseudonym was used to delineate Richard's electronic album "Heirborne" (released at the same time). Recorded August 3rd through the 5th, 1985 at Mad Hatter Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA on a 1940 Hamburg Steinway 9 ft. Concert Grand.
