Memories replay in our minds like film projected on the canvas of a theater from some bygone era. When we reminisce, we watch the action unfold as if it were on the silver screen. Canyon City—a.k.a. artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Paul Johnson—similarly cycles through formative moments on the aptly titled 2021 album, Matinée. “One of the overarching themes plays on the sweetness and the distortion of memory,” he says. “Those memories bounce around and are filtered through the lens of our own experience, which inevitably distorts them in some form or fashion. The title evokes the idea of a midday daydream playing out like a movie.”
