He began his career as the lead singer and songwriter of the post-punk band The Teardrop Explodes in the late 1970s. Since then, he has released more than 20 solo albums, including the critically acclaimed Saint Julian (1987) and Peggy Suicide (1991). He has also written several books, including his autobiography Head On (1996) and the music history book Japrocksampler (2007). Cope is known for his eccentric and often controversial behavior, and has been described as "one of the most influential and idiosyncratic musicians of his generation". He has been a vocal advocate for environmentalism, animal rights, and the preservation of ancient monuments.
